Protesters blocked the coastal road in front of the West Tripoli power plant in the Janzour area on Sunday to protest frequent power outages, in a new escalation reflecting growing public anger over the ongoing power crisis during the height of summer.

The protesters blocked the road in the direction leading from Tripoli to the city of Zawiya, while video clips shared by citizens showed heavy traffic congestion and disruptions to travel between the capital and cities along the western coast.

Power Outages Coincide with Severe Heat Waves

Libyans are enduring long hours of daily power outages at a time when the country is experiencing severe and successive heat waves, coinciding with the peak of summer in July and August.

This protest comes days after the electricity supply crisis worsened, prompting the General Electricity Company to resort to load shedding, amid repeated warnings that the grid could face increasing pressure due to rising energy demand and declining production capacity.
