Bushnaf Briefs Koury on the Efforts of the Committee to Monitor Prison Conditions and Prisoners

The Chair of the National Committee for Monitoring Prison Conditions and Prisoners, which is affiliated with the government appointed by the House of Representatives, Counselor Ibrahim Bushnaf, briefed the Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Libya for Political Affairs, Stephanie Koury, on the committee’s efforts to monitor places of detention and strengthen legal and humanitarian safeguards, in accordance with national legislation and international standards.

During their meeting at the headquarters of the Committee for Monitoring Prison and Prisoner Conditions in Benghazi, the two sides discussed the latest developments regarding prisons and prisoners in Libya, as well as ways to develop reform and rehabilitation programs and strengthen cooperation and coordination with relevant national and international institutions, according to the Libyan News Agency.

Bushnaf and Koury discussed ongoing preparations for the first International Conference on Justice and Reform, which will be held under the patronage of Deputy Commander of the General Command, Lieutenant General Saddam Haftar, in Benghazi from July 28 to 30.

The two sides reviewed the conference’s themes and objectives, as well as the importance of drawing on international expertise to discuss best practices in the fields of justice, reform, and the management of correctional institutions, thereby contributing to the development of the judicial system and the consolidation of the principles of the rule of law.
