The General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) announced on Tuesday, that the sixth gas-fired unit at the Zueitina Power Plant has been connected to the public power grid for the first time, with a generating capacity of 250 megawatts, following the completion of major upgrades and overhauls and the successful completion of operational tests.

In a statement posted on its Facebook page, the company explained that the unit’s operation represents a significant addition to the grid’s generation capacity, as part of its plan to restore idle units and return them to service in accordance with the highest technical standards.

The company affirmed that the commissioning of the sixth unit will help support the reliability of the public power grid and enhance its stability, which will positively impact the performance of the electricity system.

GECOL is attempting to restore production capacity after the grid suffered a widespread collapse when a number of power plants and major transmission lines went offline, resulting in the loss of approximately 1,350 megawatts of production capacity and power outages across most of the country.
