Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty discussed developments in Libya on Sunday with Massad Boulos, Senior Advisor to the U.S. President for Arab and African Affairs. They affirmed the importance of continuing efforts to support the political process and strengthen security and stability, while emphasizing the preservation of the unity of the Libyan state and its institutions.

The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ official Facebook page stated that during the meeting, Abdelatty reaffirmed his country’s unwavering support for Libya’s unity and stability, the need to preserve the unity of its national institutions, and the importance of reaching a comprehensive political settlement through a Libyan-led process, leading to the simultaneous holding of presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible.

The ministry added that the two sides exchanged views on international efforts aimed at advancing the political process in Libya, with Abdelatty affirming Egypt’s support for all UN, regional, and international efforts, including U.S. efforts, aimed at achieving a sustainable political settlement that preserves the unity of the Libyan state and meets the aspirations of the Libyan people.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry clarified that the meeting took place within the framework of ongoing consultation and coordination between the two sides on a number of regional issues of mutual interest, foremost among them developments in Libya.

The Situation in Sudan and the Water Issue

Regarding the situation in Sudan, Minister Abdelatty reviewed Egypt’s efforts to support Sudan’s security and stability and to preserve its unity, sovereignty, and national institutions, stressing the importance of reaching a sustainable ceasefire, intensifying the humanitarian response, and supporting a comprehensive political process that preserves Sudan’s unity.

Regarding water security, Minister Abdelatty stressed the importance of adhering to the rules of international law governing the use of transboundary water resources in a manner that serves the interests of all Nile Basin countries. He reiterated Egypt’s rejection of unilateral measures in the Eastern Nile Basin, noting that water security is an existential issue for Egypt.
