Abdulhamid Dabaiba, head of the Government of National Unity, met on Wednesday, with Major General Ahmad Hosni al-Sharkasi, director of Jordan’s General Intelligence Directorate, to discuss issues of mutual interest.
A brief statement released by Dabaiba’s media office on its Facebook page stated that the meeting addressed bilateral relations between Libya and Jordan, consultations on a number of issues of mutual interest, and regional developments, with the aim of strengthening coordination and cooperation between the two countries.
The statement did not provide further details regarding the topics discussed during the meeting. This comes at a time when the Libyan issue has seen recent activity in an effort to break the deadlock in the political crisis, amid efforts to unify the military establishment.
Earlier, Dabaiba received a written message from Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Mustafa, delivered by Minister of Industry Arafat Suleiman, who is visiting Tripoli to participate in the General Assembly meeting of the Arab Industrial Development Organization.
Regional Movements Regarding Libya
In recent weeks, U.S. Presidential Advisor Massad Boulos has intensified his domestic and regional activities as part of an initiative he is leading to unify Libyan institutions. He says this initiative complements the efforts of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), which continues to rely on the roadmap it proposed last August to create the conditions for holding general elections.
Over the past few months, the General Command in eastern Libya has carried out military training cooperation programs with Jordan, and the deputy commander of the General Command, Lieutenant General Saddam Haftar, visited Amman to discuss strengthening cooperation in this regard.
