The Senior Advisor to the President of the United States on Arab and Middle Eastern Affairs, Massad Boulos, welcomed the agreement reached by the Joint Technical Coordination Team for Border Security to activate joint border security centers in Benghazi and Tripoli.

Boulos said: “Very pleased to see that representatives from Libya’s east and west have once again come together to take practical steps that contribute to unity and stability,” according to a post on his account on X.

Participation of Officers from Eastern and Western Libya

He noted that the team’s latest meeting, hosted by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), “featured participation from senior military and police officers from the Libyan National Army, the Ministry of Defense, and the Ministry of Interior, in the presence of the Commanders of the Border Guard components of both sides.”

He concluded: “The United States strongly supports Libya’s continuing progress towards unity, which follows April’s joint participation in the Flintlock 26 military exercise and the signing of a unified national budget.”

Strengthening Coordination on Border Security

Last Thursday, the UN Mission announced that the Border Security Team, during a meeting in Sirte, had agreed on practical steps to enhance border security coordination. These included facilitating cooperation between border guard units to carry out joint and integrated missions in specific border areas, as well as activating joint border security centers.
