Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s unwavering support for Libya’s unity and stability, stressing the importance of unifying national institutions and reaching a comprehensive political settlement through a Libyan-led process that paves the way for simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections to be held as soon as possible.

This came during a phone call on Sunday between the Egyptian foreign minister and the Senior Advisor to U.S. President Donald Trump for Arab and African affairs, Massad Boulos, during which they discussed developments in Libya and Sudan and efforts to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East, according to a statement from the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Abdelatty emphasized the critical importance of resuming dialogue between the United States and Iran to reach understandings that would bring about de-escalation. He also stressed the need to resort to dialogue and diplomacy to reduce tensions and spare the region the repercussions of a widening conflict.

Preserving Sudan’s Unity

Regarding the situation in Sudan, the Egyptian Foreign Minister stressed the need to preserve Sudan’s unity and territorial integrity, support its national institutions, and reject the establishment of parallel entities, as well as the importance of launching a political process under exclusive Sudanese ownership to end the conflict.

The conversation also addressed the issue of the Ethiopian dam, Egyptian water security, and the situation in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region, where Minister Abdelatty affirmed the complete rejection of any unilateral measures, stressing that the water issue is a matter of survival for Egypt, and emphasizing the importance of respecting the rules of international law and the unity and sovereignty of the region’s states, thereby supporting regional security and stability.

Both sides expressed their appreciation for the depth of the strategic partnership between Egypt and the United States, considering it a fundamental pillar for supporting security and stability in the Middle East and Africa, and affirmed their aspiration to elevate the level of joint cooperation across various political and economic levels, and to continue close coordination and consultation on regional issues of mutual interest.
