GECOL: New 1,320-megawatt South Tripoli gas-fired power plant project nearing completion

The General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) announced that the new South Tripoli gas-fired power plant, with a capacity of 1,320 megawatts, is nearing completion, in a move aimed at enhancing the stability of the public grid and improving the efficiency of the electricity generation system.

The company said in a statement that the plant is nearing full completion in preparation for its entry into service in the coming period, thereby supporting generation capacity and helping to meet the growing demand for electricity.

In a related development, the company noted the commencement of installation and assembly work on the accessories for the 30/220 kV transformer at the 11/30/220 kV Al-Hira substation, which is currently undergoing renovation, modernization, and upgrading by technical teams from the General Administration of Power Transmission.

It added that the operation of the transformer will contribute to improving the voltage in the region, as part of the company’s measures to ensure the continuity of service provided to citizens, and within the framework of its ongoing plans to renovate the infrastructure of the electrical grid components in various cities and regions.

Major overhaul of the fifth gas-fired unit at the Zueitina Power Plant

The company also noted that the major overhaul of the fifth gas-fired unit at the Zueitina Power Plant is nearing completion, having reached its final stages, in preparation for the commencement of trial operations and the necessary technical tests.

It confirmed that the unit will be reconnected to the power grid with a production capacity of 250 megawatts, thereby contributing to the stability of the grid during the upcoming summer peak period.

The company noted that these works are part of the periodic maintenance and major overhaul plan it implements for various power generation units, with the aim of maintaining their operational readiness, extending their service life, and increasing their production efficiency, thereby enhancing grid stability and meeting the growing demand for energy in various regions.
