The Attorney General's Office ordered the arrest and detention of three suspects accused of murdering Saif al-Islam Muammar Gaddafi in the city of Zintan, after investigators were able to identify them and determine the vehicles they used during the crime, which took place last month.
Circumstances surrounding the killing of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi
A statement issued by the Attorney General's Office on Thursday evening said that “the perpetrators of the murder of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi lay in wait for him at his residence until they found him in the courtyard of his home, where they climbed over the wall surrounding the premises and surrounded the victim in an area that prevented him from escaping their grasp.”
The Attorney General's statement confirmed that the defendants “aimed their machine guns at him and fired their weapons, some of which struck his body and others missed, until he died.”

The statement added that investigators went “to the location of the victim and examined his body, recording the locations of the injuries. They then wrote down their observations after examining the traces and signs at the scene of the crime and listened to testimonies from those who had information about the incident and the circumstances surrounding it.”
The statement said that "the technical support team followed a plan to track the suspects' activities and movements before and after the incident. The technical team analyzed the evidence and clues resulting from the inspection of the crime scene and the investigation culminated in identifying the location where the suspects met, the time they left for the scene of the crime and committed it, the vehicles used by the suspects in their transportation and the route they took, and the identities of three suspects."
Gaddafi was killed on February 3 by unidentified gunmen at his home in Zintan. On February 28, the head of the Presidential Council, Mohamed Menfi, signed a memorandum of understanding with an international team of legal experts and specialists to coordinate efforts and gather evidence and clues related to the killing.
Uncertainty surrounding the killing of Saif al-Gaddafi
In February, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, Hannah Tetteh, confirmed that the circumstances surrounding the killing of Saif al-Islam Muammar Gaddafi “remain unclear,” calling on the Libyan authorities to conduct a transparent and adequate investigation into the circumstances of his assassination.
In her regular briefing to the UN Security Council on February 18, Titeh stressed the need for the Libyan authorities to ensure that those responsible for the assassination of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi are held accountable.
