Local sources in Qatrun said that Major Fares al-Farjani, an officer in the military investment apparatus of the General Command, was killed by gunmen. Libyan Facebook pages circulated a video from a surveillance camera showing the moment the gunmen attacked Al-Farjani near the Durran Al-Qatrun roundabout, where one of them got out of a car and shot him at close range before Al-Farjani attempted to respond with his automatic weapon.

Gunmen linked to smuggling activities

Sources told Alwasat that Al-Farjani was taken to hospital with injuries, where he died, while the relevant authorities began investigating the incident.

They added that the gunmen are suspected of being linked to smuggling networks operating in the south, where clashes occasionally break out between security forces and armed groups involved in illegal trafficking.

No official statements have yet been issued clarifying the circumstances of the incident or who was responsible for it, nor has any group claimed responsibility for the attack.
