The Commander of the General Command, Marshal Khalifa Haftar, discussed with a high-level Italian security delegation ways to strengthen joint cooperation in the areas of combating terrorism, irregular migration, and countering smuggling networks, during a meeting held at the General Command headquarters in Benghazi.
A statement issued by the General Command's media office said that Haftar received a delegation from Italy headed by Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi and including the head of the Italian Foreign Intelligence Agency, Giovanni Carvelli. The meeting addressed aspects of security cooperation between the two sides and prospects for its development.
During the meeting, the Italian Interior Minister conveyed Rome's appreciation for Haftar's role in maintaining security and stability in Libya and the Italian government's keenness to continue joint coordination in the interests of both countries.
For his part, Haftar pointed to the depth of bilateral relations between Libya and Italy, which, according to the statement, are based on mutual respect and common interests, stressing his keenness to strengthen cooperation, which contributes to the stability of the region and supports the partnership between the two countries.
The meeting witnessed an exchange of views on the latest developments at the local and international levels, as well as a discussion of mechanisms to enhance coordination on security issues of mutual interest, particularly with regard to combating terrorism, curbing irregular migration, and tackling human smuggling and drug trafficking networks, thereby enhancing security and stability at the regional and international levels.
