The Director of Military Intelligence for the Government of National Unity (GNU), Major General Mahmoud Hamza, paid an official visit to Valletta on Thursday to discuss joint security cooperation with military and security leaders in Malta.

The “Our Government” platform said on its Facebook page that Hamza's visit to Valletta came “at the official invitation of the State of Malta,” during which he “met with the Minister of Defense, Interior and Security, the Commander of the Maltese Armed Forces, and the Head of the Maltese Security Service.”

The platform explained that Hamza's meetings with Maltese officials and military and security leaders “addressed ways to enhance joint security cooperation, especially in the areas of training and exchange of expertise.”

The visit also included a field tour of the Special Forces headquarters, training centers, naval forces, and aviation wing, as part of developing security coordination between the two sides.

Maltese Minister of Internal Affairs Byron Camilleri recently participated in the memorial service for GNU Chief of General Staff, Lieutenant General Mohamed Al-Haddad, in Tripoli, who died with his companions when a Maltese-registered charter plane crashed near Ankara on December 23, 2025.

According to Maltese media, “Valletta and Tripoli enjoy long-standing relations” and have intensified their cooperation in recent years to stop irregular migration across the central Mediterranean.
