The British Embassy in Libya has announced that Libyan officers will join the Sandhurst Military Academy in 2026 and 2027, considering that this step “will shape the next generation of military leaders in Libya.”
Deputy Chief of Staff and Commander of the Western Coast Military Region, Lieutenant General Salah al-Namroush, visited Sandhurst Military Academy, the Soldiers' Academy, and the British Army's Command, Education, and Development Group, leading a Libyan military delegation that visited the United Kingdom in recent days.
Visit to Sandhurst Military
The British Embassy said on Tuesday that one of the most important outcomes of the Libyan delegation's visit last week was the opportunity to visit the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst—home to British Army officer training—and watch the Commandant's Parade, as the latest cohort of British and international cadets prepared to graduate.
The embassy added that with Libyan officers expected to join Sandhurst in 2026 and 2027, Al-Namroush met with the commander of the British Army's Individual Training Command and the commander of the Officer Academy, considering that “a major step in shaping Libya’s future leaders and strengthening UK-Libya ties."
The British Embassy emphasized that the United Kingdom is proud to play a leading role in this journey that Libyan military leaders will embark on, noting that by investing in education and leadership, we are helping Libya build a capable, credible force that meets international standards.
The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst is a long-established British military college and a key training center for British army officers and many international officers, being one of the world's leading military education institutions. The academy is located in the town of Camberley, southwest of London in the United Kingdom.
The Libyan military delegation's visit to the Soldiers Academy and the Command, Education, and Development Group “highlighted the UK's commitment to developing leadership from the bottom up and investing in the development of both soldiers and non-commissioned officers.”
Shaping the future of Libya's military structure
Last week, the British Military Attaché in Libya welcomed Al-Namroush and a high-level delegation from the Libyan Army to the UK in a historic visit, the first of its kind in more than a decade, according to the embassy.
The meeting included a review of the UK's global approach to professional military education and leadership development at the Defense Academy.
It added that “by sharing our expertise in institutional development, the talks at the Shireham Defence Academy laid the foundations for deeper cooperation - opening up pathways for Libyan officers to join leading UK programs and embedding UK standards at the heart of Libya's military transformation process.”
