Libya's National Oil Corporation (NOC) announced it has started withdrawing samples from areas affected by rising groundwater levels in the city of Zliten on Saturday.

The NOC said in a statement that the samples will be analyzed and the composition of the rock layers will be studied to know the chemical and physical properties of the water and to find out the causes of this phenomenon.

On Friday, the company said the Brega Oil Marketing Company had sent convoys of fuel, gas and mobile petrol stations to Zliten to help the city cope with its groundwater crisis.

A British advisory delegation also visited Zliten on Friday to discuss the problem of rising groundwater levels in the city.

One member of the delegation said that it was important to address the problem at the outset, because delay meant difficulty and increased cost, stressing the importance of collecting data to form a complete picture in order to develop an optimal solution at an appropriate cost.

The media office for Zliten's municipal council said that the high groundwater level in the municipality has led to the displacement of 17 families, warning that failure to move quickly to support the municipality may lead to declaring it a "disaster area."
