For 2023, Libya ranked 170th in the Corruption Perceptions Index, rising one place from 2022, when it ranked 171st out of 180 countries included in the index.

The only countries ranked lower than Libya were Haiti, Nicaragua, North Korea, Yemen, South Sudan, Syria, Venezuela and Somalia.

Transparency International, which issued the index on Tuesday, said that most countries in the world have not achieved significant progress in addressing corruption in the public sector.

According to the Rule of Law Index, the world is witnessing a decline in the performance of justice systems, and the countries that obtained the lowest scores on the index also recorded very low scores on the Corruption Perceptions Index, which shows a clear link between access to justice and corruption.

The organization adds: “Both authoritarian regimes and democratic leaders who undermine justice contribute to increasing the possibility of impunity for corruption, and in some cases even encourage corruption by overlooking the imposition of penalties on wrongdoers and perpetrators of illegal acts, and the impact of these actions is evident in various countries, From Venezuela to Tajikistan.”

Denmark led the list of countries on the index with 90 points for the sixth year in a row, followed by Finland and New Zealand with scores of 87 and 85 respectively.
