Ocean Viking rescues 71 migrants off Libya's coast

A relief ship belonging to the SOS Mediterranee organization rescued dozens of irregular migrants off the coast of Libya, who were on their way to Europe.

The organization said on the X, that the “OceanViking rescued 71 persons from a severely overcrowded rubber boat taking water in the Libyan Search & Rescue Region."

The Italian Rescue Coordination Center directed the crew of the Ocean Viking ship towards the port of Livorno in Tuscany on the western coast of Italy.

The port of Livorno is approximately 1,167 km away from the rescue site.

Since 2016, the SOS Mediterranee has rescued more than 39,000 migrants in the Mediterranean after they set off from Libya towards the southern shores of Europe.
