Republic of the Congo President Denis Sassou Nguesso has invited his Algerian counterpart Abdelmadjid Tebboune to participate in the summit of the African High-Level Panel on Libya, scheduled for February 5.

The invitation was handed over by Minister of Foreign Affairs Jean-Claude Gakosso, during his meeting with President Tebboune on Wednesday, according to an Algerian statement.

After his meeting with President Tebboune in Algiers, Gakoso said in a statement that he had come to Algeria to hand "an official invitation to participate in the summit of heads of state of the African Union High-Level Panel on Libya."

The Congolese minister warned that "the Libyan file is complex, and no one knows it like Algerians," noting that "Algeria is a central power in the region, and it includes a vast border with this country (Libya)."

"The African Union always believes that there is no point in holding elections (in Libya) without achieving a minimum level of national reconciliation," he said, stressing that "attempts are underway to reunite the brothers around the same table" to help them overcome the current crisis.

Reconciliation Conference in Libya

In this regard, the Congolese minister referred to "the decision of independent Libyans to hold a reconciliation conference on April 28" in Sirte, as announced by the preparatory committee at the end of its third meeting held in the city of Sebha weeks ago.

The Congolese foreign minister had previously handed an official invitation to Tunisian President Kais Saied during his visit to Tunisia on January 13, to participate in the upcoming "Brazzaville summit" on Libya, before traveling to Zuwara and Tripoli to participate in the fourth meeting of the preparatory committee for the national reconciliation conference, which concluded its work on Monday.

The African High-Level Panel on Libya has 10 members: Algeria, South Africa, Congo Brazzaville, Ethiopia, Egypt, Niger, Mauritania, Sudan, Tunisia and Uganda.
