The High Council of State announced on Tuesday that it voted to reject the agreement the Government of National Unity (GNU) intends to sign to develop the Hamada oil field, in addition to rejecting the laws issued by the House of Representatives.

This came during the ninety-fourth session of the council, which was held today in Tripoli, under the chairmanship of Muhammad Takala.

A statement published by the council's media office said that today's session discussed "the abuses carried out by the House of Representatives in issuing laws" without consulting the council and rejected laws issued by the House of Representatives in violation of the political agreement."

The session also discussed Hamada oil field, which the National Oil Corporation intends to sign an agreement to develop. The council voted "to reject this deal and encourage local investment."

The planned agreement sparked controversy and was rejected by the House of Representatives, which accused the GNU of "ceding nearly 40% of the field's production to a coalition" of foreign companies. It also called on the Ministry of Oil and Gas to reconsider the negotiations leading up to the agreement.

The Public Prosecution asked the head of the National Oil Corporation, Farhat Bengdara, to suspend the negotiations "until a decisive judicial ruling is issued on contracting procedures."

The Audit Bureau in Tripoli also recommended suspending the negotiations until studies and technical reports can be reviewed.
