The head of Libya's parliament-appointed government accused the United Nations (UN) of being supportive of "undermining Libya's independence in indirect ways," accusing UN envoy Abdoulaye Bathily of "desperately attempting to implement his biased policies to achieve wishes hostile to the Libyan people".

Osama Hammad added in his Sunday speech to mark the 72nd anniversary of Libya's independence, "The UN was supportive of obtaining Libya's independence at the time, but now, through its policy directed by some international parties, it supports undermining this independence in indirect ways."

Hammad accused the UN of "consolidating interference in the internal affairs of the country, through its current envoy, who is trying with strange desperation to establish and implement his policies that are biased towards one party at the expense of the other, in order to achieve international desires hostile to the Libyan people. This deepens the causes of division and fragmentation."

He explained that despite the positions of the House of Representatives and the General Command of the Armed Forces rejecting the plans of the UN mission, they insist on touring between cities which "undermines Libyan sovereignty, contradicts independence, and disrepects the sacrifices made by martyrs".

Hammad called on all Libyans "to preserve the independence of their state from external interference," speaking of his vision to settle the current crisis in the country, stressing that "the only solution is a Libyan to Libyan one."

The attack by Hammad comes against the backdrop of his government's exclusion from UN envoy Bathily's recently announced initiative for elections.
