U.S. Special Envoy Richard Norland, U.S. Embassy Chargé d'Affaires to Libya Jeremy Berndt and Marshal Khalifa Haftar discussed ways to strengthen UN envoy Abdoulaye Bathily's efforts to bring together stakeholders to resolve political issues standing in the way of elections and form a unified government.

The U.S. Embassy said on its X account that the U.S. officials emphasized "the importance of unifying #Libya’s military, safeguarding Libyan sovereignty, and ensuring the release of funds for the reconstruction of Derna and other flood affected areas in a transparent, expert-driven manner, with robust technical support from international institutions."

The UN envoy has previously called on the five main parties in Libya to engage in a preparatory dialogue for a five-way summit.

"Some Libyan leaders are stagnating, and have not shown a firm commitment to ending the political stalemate in the country," Bathily said in a briefing to the Security Council on Monday, noting that they did not "reject the invitation to the five-way meeting directly, but some of them set conditions for participation."
