The General Authority for Search and Identification of Missing Persons announced on Saturday the exhumation of 159 bodies from the Dhahr Al-Ahmar cemetary in the city of Derna.

The authority said in a statement that its teams exhumed the bodies to withdraw DNA samples for identification, adding that they have collected samples from 4,347 victims of Storm Daniel flooding.

Storm Daniel hit north-eastern Libya on Sunday September 10, bringing strong winds and sudden heavy rainfall which led to massive flooding, devastation and deaths. Infrastructure was greatly damaged, including dams near Derna that burst, causing flooding which swept away entire neighborhoods.
