The Attorney General has ordered the detention of the Libyan Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium and the Duchy of Luxembourg, Amal Jarari, “as a precautionary measure pending investigation,” according to a statement released on Tuesday evening.
Jarari is accused of seeking to transfer $200,000 to a private account from funds allocated for treating Libyan patients abroad.
The statement confirmed that an investigation is underway into Jarari "unlawfully seizing public funds and causing harm to the public interest.”
The statement added, “her detention is ordered pending investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.”
Government of National Unity Prime Minister and Acting Foreign Minister Abdulhamid Al-Dabaiba dismissed Jariri from her post earlier on Tuesday.
Jarari's secretary at the Libyan Embassy in Belgium, Nadeema Gritli, confirmed the authenticity of a leaked audio and documents showing the ambassador requesting the transfer of $200,000 to her private account.
Gritli added that the leak spread on social media was not fabricated, as it came from the ambassador’s phone and she documented it with a lawyer’s office.
In the audio recording, the ambassador asked Gritli to prepare a fake invoice for a non existing patient suffering from cancer. Jarari intended to transfer the funds to her personal account after the Libyan Ministry of Health transferred the sum to the embassy's account in Belgium.
