Libyan Attorney General Siddiq Al-Sur announced on Tuesday the opening of an investigation into the embezzlement of public funds at the Libyan embassy in Belgium.

Former Ambassador Amal Jarari is accused of seeking to transfer $200,000 to a private account from funds allocated for treating patients.

Al-Sur said during a press conference that the prosecution is dealing with this case “seriously,” stressing that its results will be announced within two days.

Jarari's secretary at the Libyan Embassy in Belgium, Nadeema Gritli, confirmed the authenticity of a leaked audio and documents showing the ambassador requesting the transfer of $200,000 to her private account.

Gritli added that the leak spread on social media was not fabricated, as it came from the ambassador’s phone and she documented it with a lawyer’s office.

In the audio recording, the ambassador asked Gritli to prepare a fake invoice for a non existing patient suffering from cancer. Jarari intended to transfer the funds to her personal account after the Libyan Ministry of Health transferred the sum to the embassy's account in Belgium.
