The Interior Minister for Libya's interim Government of National Unity (GNU), Imad Trabelsi, announced on Wednesday that surveillance cameras will be installed and troops will be deployed along the border with Tunisia, as part of the ministry's plan to deal with the issue of irregular migration.

Trabelsi's announcement came during a press conference held today at the headquarters of the Department for Combating Illegal Migration ahead of the deportation of dozens of migrants.

Trabelsi said that the work carried out by the Ministry of Interior on dealing with the issue of irregular migration "has not happened for 10 years," stressing that all the ministry's security agencies in the eastern and southern regions "are making great efforts in this regard."

He also added that he will visit the border and hold a press conference there.

"For the first time, our border with Tunisia is equipped with day and night cameras. Today, I guarantee our border with Tunisia from Ras Ajdir (north), to the Mashhad Salah area (south) and to the Wazin region will have forces officially affiliated with the Ministry of Interior equipped and placed there, and an army force has come to participate in this work."

Trabelsi stressed that Libya's border with Tunisia "is now closed to smuggling permanently," pointing out that there are some migrant flows that come from Tunisia to Libya on foot, "and some organizations have encouraged this matter, as some aid is paid to migrants in Libya and Tunisia."
