Residents of Tripoli woke up on Friday to heavy security deployment at the entrances of the city in anticipation of demonstrations following a wave of protests against the disclosure of a meeting between sacked Foreign Minister Najla Mangoush and her Israeli counterpart Eli Cohen in Rome on August 23.

Residents in a number of neighborhoods contacted by Alwasat reported seeing armored vehicles and armed members of the security forces in the neighborhoods of Zawiya al-Dahmani, Fashloum, al-Hani, and on al-Shatt Street leading to Mitiga airport, east of the city's center.

Libyan cities, including Tripoli, Zuwara, Zawiya, Marj and Misrata, have witnessed demonstrations rejecting normalization with Israel and the Mangoush-Cohen meeting, and in support of the Palestinian cause, since the meeting became public on Sunday.

In a speech at the cabinet meeting on Thursday, Interior Minister Imad Trabelsi said that the ministry "will not allow any party to create chaos in Tripoli".

He pointed out that the attempt to "exploit the first of September to protest was unacceptable," in an implicit warning to supporters of the former Gaddafi regime.

September 1 is the anniversay of Muammar Gaddafi's 1969 coup.

Trabelsi called on those wishing to organize demonstrations and protests to apply to the Ministry of Interior in order to obtain the necessary permits in this regard, warning acts of chaos and violence that cause damage to public and private property that will be addressed by force of law.
