Libya and Iran agree to develop bilateral cooperation and form a High Joint Commission

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation for Libya's interim Government of National Unity, Najla Mangoush, agreed with her Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, "to form a High Joint Commission for political consultations, strengthening economic and trade relations, promoting scientific and technological cooperation, and holding exhibitions."

The meeting was held at the headquarters of the Iranian Foreign Ministry in Tehran on Tuesday, according to a Libyan Foreign Ministry statement.

The mnistry explained that the talks discussed "steps by the two sides to resume diplomatic representation and develop economic cooperation between the two countries," noting that Mangoush renewed during the meeting "the position of the State of Libya in support of a Saudi initiative to start a new phase of Arab-Iranian relations, based on the common interests of the countries and peoples of the region."

The Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported that Mangoush exchanged views with her Iranian counterpart on bilateral relations, the development of cooperation and the most important regional and international issues.

The two sides expressed their satisfaction with the development of relations between the two countries in recent months, including raising the level of Libyan diplomatic representation in Tehran to the level of ambassador, the resumption of the activity of the Iranian embassy in Tripoli and the resumption of the shipping traffic between the two countries.

Mangoush and her accompanying delegation arrived on Tuesday morning, she is the first high-ranking Libyan official to visit Tehran in 17 years.
