The head of Libya's interim Government of National Unity (GNU), Abdulhamid Dabaiba, and the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, Barbara Leaf, confirmed support for the efforts of the United Nations Mission in Libya to reach elections in 2023.
This came during a meeting on Tuesday morning, in the presence of the U.S. Ambassador Richard Norland, and Chargé d'Affaires Leslie Ordeman, according to a GNU statement.
The meeting also discussed political developments in Libya and the importance of uniting international and local efforts.
On Monday, the American official met with Libyan National Army Commander Marshal Khalifa Haftar, where she discussed the activities of the Russian Wagner Group, stressing its “destabilizing and predatory role in Libya and the region."
