Libya's parliament-appointed expressed its surprise at a statement released by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya about the readiness of the Government of National Unity's (GNU) Interior Ministry to ensure the security and safety of the elections.

The Fathi Bashagha led Government of National Stability (GNS) said on Sunday "The influence of the Dabaiba government does not extend beyond Tripoli and neighboring regions."

Bashagha's Ministry of Interior affirmed its keenness to “unite the ranks, work on solidarity and support all the Libyan people in order to reach electoral maturity.”

The ministry added: "Promoting this news and allowing its publication leads to a loss of credibility and contradicts the reality of the Libyan scene."

The ministry concluded its statement by calling on the UN mission to "respect the Security Council's decision regarding its establishment".

On Saturday, UN envoy Abdoulaye Bathily met with GNU Interior Minister Imad Trabelsi and discussed the ministry's preparations to secure and protect elections at the municipal and national levels.

That was followed by a separate meeting with Abdulhamid Dabaiba on Sunday.
