Libya's Presidential Council welcomed UN Security Council Resolution 2656 issued on Friday, which calls for the “disarmament of armed groups.”

The council said in a statement that the resolution urges all Libyan parties to "prioritize the interest of the country, put it above all considerations, and cooperate with the United Nations mission to complete the outcomes of the Libyan political dialogue in order to achieve political stability, end transitional stages, and bring election day closer."

The Security Council said there was a need to “plan for the disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration of armed groups in Libya and all relevant non-state armed actors.”

The resolution called for the disarmament of armed groups to be "part of an integrated, comprehensive and coherent approach to peacebuilding," including the return of armed elements to their countries of origin.

It also urged "regional coordination, taking into account peacebuilding needs and priorities," noting "the recognition of the need to plan for security sector reform and the establishment of a comprehensive, unified and accountable civilian-led security architecture for Libya," calling on "Libyan authorities to engage and make progress on this issue."
