The Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Karim Ahmad Khan, announced, without specifying an exact date, an upcoming visit to Libya, which will come to enhance cooperation with Libyan authorities and ensure accountability, as one of the basic principles of the court's strategy.

Karim Khan's statement came within a statement by the International Criminal Court on Saturday evening, in which it welcomed the arrest of two suspects involved in smuggling people from Africa to Europe via Libya, considering that "their extradition is of great importance in the work undertaken by Italy and the Netherlands to hold the perpetrators accountable for crimes targeting migrants."

The arrests are related to the extradition of a 38-year-old Eritrean man from Ethiopia to the Netherlands on October 5 after years of investigations by the Dutch Public Prosecution Office.

Another defendant, a 35-year-old Eritrean, was extradited from Ethiopia to Italy on October 12.

Both suspects subjected the victims to "brutal violence, including in the camps located in Libya, and practiced beatings, starvation, sexual violence and extortion," according to the statement.

Karim Khan referred to his recent report to the United Nations Security Council, in which he stressed that the situation in Libya is a priority for his office, and that deepening cooperation with national authorities and seeking accountability is one of the fundamental principles at the core of the renewed strategy he outlined before the Council in April of this year.
