The Office of the Military Prosecutor said on Thursday that Government of National Unity Justice Minister Halima Abdel Rahman issued an order to release Gaddafi-era security official Mansour Dhao due to his declining health.

The office denied any connection with the decision, noting that Dhao was in the military prison due to his previous position and had been sentenced to death by the civil judiciary in Misrata.

The statement indicated that the matter was referred to the Director of the Military Police Department to act in accordance with laws and regulations.

Dhao held the position of security chief in charge of protecting Muammar Gaddafi, as well as head of the People's Guard.

He was arrested in Sirte on October 20, 2011, and then transferred to the city of Misrata, where he was tried and sentenced to death.
