The Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission in Libya, Waheeda Al-Ayari, said that the High-level Committee of the Union on Libya "intends to hold an inclusive conference for reconciliation, with Libyans themselves determining its agenda as a Libyan conference under African auspices."
Al-Ayari suggested, in statements to the Saudi newspaper, Asharq Al-Awsat, that “the conference will be a complementary path if the current path fails,” explaining that the union is “focusing on national reconciliation and support for the existing political path adopted by the international community in Berlin 1.”
In response to a question about the divergence of the African and Western roles in Libya, the Al-Ayari refused to portray the matter as a case of competition between the African Union and major Western countries, saying: “Libya is not a racetrack for each group to propose an initiative, there is no competition over who will be able to resolve the conflict."
She stressed that the neighboring African and European countries are "affected by what is happening in Libya in terms of the presence of mercenaries, weapons and illegal immigration," noting that "the Libyan issue has been present since 2011".
On July 3, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki, expressed his support for "popular demands for a better life" in Libya, stressing that he is following with great interest the developments in the country.
