Officials in Nigeria said that the perpetrators of an armed attack on a Catholic church in the southwestern state of Ondo were foreigners from Mali who had trained in Libya.

This was stated by the Governor of Ondo State, Oluwarotimi Akridolo, who called on the security forces to find those involved in this "blatant and demonic attack", according to a statement carried by local media on Monday.

The terrorist attack left at least 50 people dead, as it occurred when worshipers gathered on the day of Pentecost, according to the representative of Ondo state, Ogumulaswe Oluwele.

He added that the gunmen "opened fire on worshipers in the church on Sunday and detonated explosive devices, leaving dozens of people dead, including children."

No party has claimed responsibility for the terrorist attack so far, but fingers point to the most active terror organization in Nigeria, Boko Haram.

Countries in the region, in cooperation with the United States and the African Union, have mobilized 8,000 soldiers to resist the group since 2015.
