NATO leaders urged Libya's government of national unity and the House of Representatives to stick to the date of "free, fair and inclusive presidential and parliamentary elections", expressing their willingness to advise on building military and security institutions in Libya.
NATO leaders expressed concern at the "immediate implications of the crisis in Libya for regional stability and the security of all allies" in a final statement at their summit in Brussels, Belgium, on Monday. They welcomed the progress made in Libya, including the appointment of an interim government and a presidential council. NATO leaders also praised the efforts of the United Nations in supporting the Libyan-led and Libyan-owned political process, aimed at promoting national reconciliation and unifying and strengthening state institutions.
Regarding the benefits provided for in the UN road map, NATO leaders called on all relevant Libyan authorities and institutions, including the government of national unity and the House of Representatives, to make preparations for free, fair and inclusive national presidential and parliamentary elections on December 24, 2021. Along with the implementation of Security Council resolutions No. 2570 and 2571 and the ceasefire on 23 October 2020.
The leaders of the 30 NATO countries met in Brussels and discussed an agenda centered on the future of the Alliance, a 10-year roadmap for it, as well as the relationship with Russia, China, climate change and cyber threats.
