Libya's High Council of State on Monday demanded to freeze diplomatic relations with Lebanon over the desecration of the Libyan national flag by members of Lebanon's Amal Movement.

"The High Council of State condemns and denounces the insult to the Libyan flag by the Lebanese Amal Movement in the venue of the upcoming Arab Economic and Social Development Summit in Beirut," the council said in a statement.

The statement also demanded the Arab League "clarify its position regarding the incident and alienate Lebanon from any Arab event until the Lebanese authorities take responsibility ... commit to diplomatic norms, and take deterrent measures to ensure such acts do not occur again."

Social media published footage of angry Lebanese young people, believed to be members of the Amal Movement, desecrating the Libyan national flag.

The Shiite Amal Movement accuses Libya's late former leader Muammar Gaddafi of being responsible for the disappearance of the Shiite leader Musa al-Sadr during his visit to Libya in 1978.

Gaddafi had long denied involvement in al-Sadr's disappearance.

Leaders of Amal Movement demanded to prevent Libya from taking part in the summit until revealing the truth of al-Sadr's disappearance.
