Number of cases of suffocation caused by the dust storms in Tobruk rises to 79

The Tobruk Medical Center announced on Thursday, that the number of cases of suffocation caused by the dust storm hitting the Al-Butnan region has risen to 79. The necessary first aid was provided to these patients, including steam and oxygen therapy.

In an update on its Facebook page, the center noted that the emergency department—covering both orthopedics and surgery—received 43 cases, three of which were admitted to inpatient wards for further treatment, confirming that the health situation remains under control so far.

Second Day of Emergency Meeting

In a related development, the Emergency Committee for Climate Fluctuations held its second meeting today in the presence of Faraj Al-Jali, Director General of the Tobruk Medical Center, and Adnan Bin Khayal, Director of Medical Affairs, to monitor the latest developments and take all necessary measures to ensure the center’s readiness and the continued provision of medical services with high efficiency under these circumstances.

The committee emphasized the necessity of having doctors present in all departments, particularly in the Emergency and Pediatric Departments, alongside technicians and medical staff, to ensure round-the-clock medical services during the dust storm, while also working to provide them with amenities to ensure continued high-efficiency performance.

Provision of Medical Supplies

The committee also discussed pharmacy management, emphasizing the importance of providing necessary medical supplies such as masks, oxygen devices, and bronchodilators, as well as first-aid medications for cases of suffocation and shortness of breath.

Regarding the Engineering Department, the committee emphasized the need to secure oxygen supplies, including liquid oxygen, as well as ensuring the availability of fuel necessary for the uninterrupted operation of electricity generators.

Regarding the Services Department, the committee stressed the need to provide for all the needs of doctors and patients, while instructing the cleaning company to work around the clock to ensure the highest levels of cleanliness and sterilization within the wards and facilities.

Since yesterday, eastern and southern Libya have been experiencing a wave of severe weather due to dust storms and strong winds carrying dust, which have disrupted traffic on main and secondary roads and forced authorities to suspend classes and restrict movement to protect lives.
