The National Heart Center in Tajoura has signed an agreement with the Italian non-profit ABEO (Associazione Bambino Emopatico Oncologico), to perform 450 pediatric heart surgeries over a three-year period, in a move aimed at supporting specialized health services and expanding the scope of treatment for pediatric heart diseases.
The Center said in a statement on its Facebook page that the agreement stipulates the performance of 100 surgeries during the first year, 150 surgeries in the second year, and 200 surgeries in the third year.
Training of Libyan Medical Staff
It added that the agreement also includes training Libyan medical and paramedical staff in open-heart surgery, both within Libya and in Italy, including doctors and specialized nursing staff, as part of efforts to enhance human resource capabilities and localize medical expertise.
It noted that the cooperation also includes establishing and equipping a new team specialized in pediatric electrophysiology, which will contribute to developing the services provided at the center and expanding treatment options.
Start Date of Operations
The center confirmed that operations will begin in May 2026, with details to be announced upon the arrival of the visiting medical team and the start of the treatment program.
The center invited parents of children in need of heart surgery to visit the center to undergo the necessary examinations in the pediatric cardiology department, in preparation for evaluating the cases and adding them to the surgery waiting lists.
