The General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) announced on Wednesday, that it expects to add more than 600 megawatts to the public grid’s generating capacity as a number of power generation units come online in the near future, following the successful completion of operational trials and tests.

The units expected to come online soon include: the sixth gas-fired unit at the Zuwetina Power Plant with a capacity of 250 megawatts; the third gas-fired unit at the Zawiya Dual-Fuel Power Plant with a capacity of 220 megawatts; and the third gas-fired unit at the Obari Gas-Fired Power Plant with a capacity of 160 megawatts, according to a statement issued by the company.

These additions are part of GECOL's efforts to boost the public grid’s production capacity, increase the efficiency of the generation system, enhance the stability of the power grid, and improve the level of service provided to citizens, according to the statement.

The government appointed by the House of Representatives, headed by Osama Hammad, estimated that Libya is facing an energy production deficit of 1,200 megawatts. In a statement issued on Tuesday, it denied that the Libyan power grid is currently connected to the Tunisian power grid.
