Düsseldorf Airport in Germany has released a flight schedule for the coming period, which indicates that flights to Libya will begin on May 17.
The first flight will depart for Mitiga International Airport in Tripoli, followed two days later by another flight to Benina International Airport in Benghazi. Both flights will be operated by the Libyan airline “Med Sky,” according to the schedule published on the airport’s website.
The European ban on Libyan flights
Since 2014, the European Union has banned flights by Libyan airlines amid ongoing concerns regarding safety and security at Libyan airports and in Libyan airspace, despite the end of the war in October 2020 and improvements in aviation infrastructure.
The European Union’s blacklist includes seven Libyan airlines, including Libyan Airlines and Afriqiyah Airways; these airlines are prohibited from operating flights to or from EU member states.
However, on January 12, 2025, the Italian airline “ETA” resumed its direct flights to the capital Tripoli, becoming the first airline from a major Western European country to take this step after a ten-year hiatus, which paved the way for the possibility of organizing flights from other European destinations to Libya.
