Azerbaijan’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Yalchin Rafiyev, announced that his country is considering reopening its embassy in Libya, nearly two years after suspending operations at a number of Azerbaijani diplomatic missions abroad.
In an interview with the AZERTAC news agency on Tuesday, Rafiyev explained that Azerbaijan currently maintains diplomatic relations with 53 out of 54 African countries, noting that the Central African Republic is the only country with which official relations have not yet been established, and he expects these procedures to be completed soon.
The issue is on the agenda
He added that Azerbaijan currently has embassies in six African countries, noting that the activities of the Azerbaijani embassy in Libya are “temporarily suspended,” but he confirmed that the issue of reopening it is “on the agenda.”
It is worth noting that the Azerbaijani Parliament announced in December 2024 the suspension of operations at a number of diplomatic missions, including the embassy in Libya and the embassy in Syria, as well as the Consulate General in the Ukrainian city of Odessa.
At the time, Samad Sayidov, Chairman of the Committee on International and Interparliamentary Relations in the Azerbaijani Parliament, said the suspension decision was part of arrangements related to reorganizing the work of diplomatic missions abroad.
It is worth noting that the leader of the Presidential Council, Mohamed Menfi, participated on May 17 in the proceedings of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum, which was held in Azerbaijan.
