Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Alistair Burt welcomed the meeting of the Libyan leaders held in Paris on Tuesday, in which they agreed to hold presidential and legislative elections on December 10.

"The British government welcomes the meeting of the Libyan leaders held yesterday in Paris with Ghassan Salame, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations," the Minister of Middle East Affairs said in a statement. "The commitment they have shown represents perhaps an important step towards the political transition in Libya, including creating the conditions for a successful election. "

"We urge all of their leaders to take full advantage of the UN-led efforts to facilitate a more comprehensive political settlement in Libya," he said.

"The United Kingdom will continue to work closely with its international partners in support of the efforts of Special Representative Ghassan Salame and our common goal of becoming a stable Libya capable of meeting the challenges of migration, terrorism and other challenges," he said.
