China called on the International Criminal Court to commit to promoting Libya’s internal unity in all its actions “rather than deepening divisions and tensions.” Sun Lei, China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, said that the court must carry out its work in Libya in an objective and impartial manner, during his remarks at a Security Council meeting on Libya on Friday.
He added that Beijing “has taken note of the court’s recent work regarding evidence collection, investigation, and judicial proceedings, and we call on it to continue carrying out its mandate in full accordance with the facts and the law, and to ensure that relevant procedures are consistent with the fundamental principles of international criminal justice.”
Chinese Calls to Win the Support of the Libyan People
He stressed the need to “continue to respect Libya’s judicial sovereignty, strengthen communication and coordination with Libyan authorities, and properly handle the relationship between international and domestic justice, while gaining greater understanding and support from the Libyan people.”
Beijing calls for engagement with all Libyan parties
Regarding the political crisis, the Chinese representative said the international community should collectively engage with the relevant Libyan parties, encourage them to resolve their differences through dialogue and consultation, and participate in good faith in UN-led mediation.
He also called for building consensus on holding national elections and unifying institutions, noting that China will work with all parties to strongly support Libya’s efforts to protect its sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity. He added that his country is committed to playing a constructive role in achieving national unity and lasting peace in Libya “as soon as possible.”
