A Japanese foreign ministry official said his country sees "some recovery in the domestic security situation in Libya," in a statement during a visit by Presidential Council member Abdullah Al-Lafi to Tokyo.

Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikaw held a meeting with Al-Lafi and agreed to work to strengthen Japan-Libya relations, including economic cooperation, Japanese media reported on Thursday.

The agreement came after Japan reopened its embassy in Libya earlier this month, it had been closed since 2014.

During their meeting, Kamikawa expressed Japan's support for stability in Libya, while Al-Lafi expressed hope to expand cooperation with Japan.

According to a statement issued by the Presidential Council, they discussed "coordinating international positions between the missions of the two countries in international forums, including the firm Libyan position on the Palestinian issue, coordinating the Japanese government's support for peacebuilding efforts in Libya through the national reconciliation project, the return of Japanese companies to work in Libya, and lifting the travel ban on Japanese citizens to Libya."

On Wednesday morning, Al-Lafi opened the first Libyan-Japanese Economic Forum, which witnessed the participation of Japanese companies in several sectors, especially the oil, gas and renewable energy sector.
