The Speaker of Libya's House of Representatives, Aguila Saleh, held a meeting with figures from the city of Misrata to discuss efforts to end the current stage by forming a unified government with the aim of holding presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible, said spokesman Abdullah Bliheg.

Bliheg said in a statement on Tuesday evening that Saleh received the group led by High Council of State member Belkacem Qazeit at his office in the city of Al-Qubbah.

Saleh's discussion comes after UN envoy Abdoulaye Bathily met with High Council of State leader Mohamed Takala, urging the House of Representatives and the High Council of State to "resume their contacts with the aim of speeding up the completion of electoral laws."

Bathily also renewed his call for the 6+6 electoral law preparation committee to reach agreement without delay on contentious electoral issues, in post on his X account on Tuesday.

The committe has yet to reach a final agreement depite several rounds and meetings.

In his last briefing to the Security Council, on August 22, Bathily said that "the formation of a unified government is essential to lead the country to elections."
