The UN envoy to Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily, met on Thursday with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow.

The UN envoy said in a tweet on Friday: "We agreed that the international community must play a decisive role in helping the Libyan people achieve their goal of holding comprehensive parliamentary and presidential elections in 2023."

A statement issued by the Russian Foreign Ministry stressed the emphasis of the two parties on "the importance of coordinating good faith international efforts aimed at overcoming the protracted conflict under the UN leadership. This should be implemented through an inclusive process involving all major political forces in the country."

Lavrov also renewed Russia's support for Bathily's activities and a commitment to close cooperation with the United Nations Mission in Libya.

"The lack of alternative to achieving a just, long-term and mutually acceptable settlement within the framework of a political process led and carried out by the Libyans themselves has been noted," the statement read.

The meeting in Moscow comes after visits by Bathily to Paris and Berlin this week.
