The U.S. Embassy in Libya announced the success of efforts to renovate an old market in Ghat and turn it into a museum as part of a grant to implement the Cultural Property Agreement.

The work was carried out in cooperation between American Society of Overseas Research (ASOR) and the Ghat Women's Union, according to an embassy statement.

ASOR says the project is part of ongoing efforts to protect Libya's cultural heritage, where a mud-brick building in the old public market has been restored and revived as a public museum.

It said in a statement on its website that this market was once established in the center of the city of Ghat, and was a meeting place for traders passing through the Sahara in Africa, and an important point for the exchange of goods that come from areas thousands of kilometers away.
