Nigeria's President Mohamed Bukhari has blamed the resurgence of Boko Haram attacks in his country and the Sahel region on the instability in Libya.

Bukhari's remarks came as he received the new special representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel, Mohammed Saleh Al-Anadaf, on Tuesday, while urging the countries of the West Africa and Sahel region to cooperate in the face of insecurity.

"I hope that, under the auspices of the United Nations Office for West Africa, it will help solve the problems, most of which are related to the instability in Libya, and it affects us all," Bukhari added.

Former Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau killed himself during a battle rather than be taken into custody in May. Security experts warn that ISIS remnants are exploiting opportunities to revive sleeper cells in the region.
