U.S. President Joe Biden announced that the political stalemate in Libya will be part of the consultations he is conducting as part of his visit to the Middle East in the coming days.

In an opinion piece for The Washington Post titled "Why Am I Going to Saudi Arabia?", Biden pointed to the challenges facing the region, including Iran's nuclear program and it's support for proxy groups, the Syrian civil war, and worsening food security crises due to the war in Ukraine. In addition to the political deadlocks in Libya, Iraq and Lebanon, and human rights standards that lag behind in much of the world, he said.

A political stalemate has dominated the Libyan scene, since elections failed at the end of 2021.
