Libya's parliament-appointed government, led by Osama Hammad, announced the cancellation of the official celebrations for 13th anniversary of the February 17 revolution this year, in solidarity with the victims of Storm Daniel that hit eastern Libya in September.

The government said in a statement that it decided to cancel the official celebrations to "employ all human and material capabilities in the field of reconstruction of affected cities and areas, through the Derna Reconstruction Fund and the affected cities and areas, and to preserve public money."

It also attributed the reason for the cancellation to solidarity with the people of the city of Zliten, which is currently witnessing a rise in the groundwater level.

It noted that citizens are allowed to celebrate the occasion individually.

In a related context, Osama Hammad issued a decision to declare Saturday and Sunday, February 17 and 18, official holidays on the occasion of the anniversary of the February 17th revolution.

The interim government of national unity is making preparations in the capital Tripoli to commemorate the February revolution, as Martyrs' Square, which will be completely closed on Thursday evening, has been prepared for the occasion.
