The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily, said that the dire consequences of Storm Daniel could have been mitigated if unified political, security and administrative institutions had been in place in Libya, adding that it is time to reunite the country and fortify it in the face of future challenges.
This came during his speech in a meeting with Government of National Unity Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dabaiba on Monday.
During the meeting, Bathily offered his condolences for the victims of the storm and praised the spirit of solidarity among all Libyans, calling on political leaders to follow their example.
"We discussed relief and recovery efforts in the devastated areas, including plans for reconstruction. I stressed the need for a unified, inclusive and accountable process that takes into consideration the urgent & long-term needs of affected populations", Bathily added in a post on X.
The meeting also discussed "the mechanism for coordinating international and UN efforts to address the situation in all affected areas," according to a statement by the government.
